...about Quiz Meisters Trivia

What would Kylie look like with a Nicholas Cage face-lift? Who ducks when you throw a miniature cricket bat around in a room full of people? Can you tell a porn star from a kids' toy? How do Top 40 hits sound when you get a narcissistic Romanian to sing them? What would gambling be like if you bet on Nintendo games instead of horses?

These are a few of the things you'll be pondering on a night with Quiz Meisters, because our trivia is just a little bit nuts. We take a bit of comedy, some dodgy acting, a few DVD questions and a pinch of Chuck Norris, chuck them all in a blender and what comes out is the finest in local pub quiz-ine.

The pun may be terrible, but the shows are hilarious. For us, the trivia is only one part of a night out with Quiz Meisters. As Darryl Kerrigan would say, 'it's what you do with it, love,' and Quiz Meisters does much more than scoop it out of the punnet. The questions are still top-notch, but we'd get bored if we delivered them to you straight up. That's why we incorporate fun mobile phone games, irreverent Jacko sketches and fake Jerry Springer episodes to keep you laughing as well as guessing.

History

The Beginning Quiz Meisters started with a backyard ambition of giving creatively minded friends employment with a job that actually practiced their craft (rather than have it wasted on waiting tables). The official date of birth is 4 February 2004, although the concept was not named Quiz Meisters until a few weeks later when Pete's dad had some Yiddish inspiration after eating a pretzel. The very first Quiz Meisters show (although it was called 'Curried Lint Trivia' at the time) was actually a 21st birthday party for a girl named Leonie. They have not done a 21st birthday since.

2004 - The First ShowThe first official Quiz Meisters pub show was on Tuesday, 27 April, 2004 at the Commercial Club Hotel in Fitzroy. With mainly friends and family in attendance, the first show contained segments that are still used today such as Name These Films and Jacko Surgery. It also included a take-off of a commercial that saw founders Steffan and Pete dressed up in Pete’s sister’s underwear.

2005 - The Story of ReebWhile 'the unsackable' John Card was Quiz Meisters' first employee, it was Hayden Bevis (after a drunken phone call begging to become part of the team) who became the first full-time employee. His first job was to play the 'buxom wench' in a western spoof the boys produced called The Story Of Reeb, which went on to became a finalist at the Flower Cut Film Festival in 2005.

2005 - Quiz Meisters on TVAt 9:30pm on Thursday 6 October 2005, the first episode of Quiz Meisters Trivia (the TV show) aired on Channel 31. With Opera Boy (Chris Ryan) as the host and Alby the puppet as co-host, Quiz Meisters Trivia was nominated for 4 Australian Antenna Awards (Best Comedy Show, Best Variety Show, Best Male Host and Best Sponsorship Announcement), and was seen by over 500,000 viewers in its 13 episode Melbourne season.

2006 - Quiz Meisters moves interstateIn 2006, an article in The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald about the boys made its way into the hands of a Queensland pub owner. This was Quiz Meisters' first foray outside the garden state and by the end of the year Quiz Meisters was in 5 interstate venues bringing the total to 27 Australian venues.

2007 - Quiz Meisters goes corporate2007 also saw Quiz Meisters evolve in the corporate sector. Rather than just presenting the usual Quiz Meisters show for clients, the team started to tailor quizzes to include elements of their clients. This included a professional themed show for clients of ANZ Private, CEOs acting out scenes for questions at PricewaterhouseCoopers, a satellite-linked live show between Toyota Melbourne and Toyota Sydney, and a surf-skate-fashion product launch tour with Hurley.

2009 - Festival time2009 was Quiz Meisters' busiest to date. In addition to the usual stream of activity, Quiz Meisters entered the festival circuit with Quiz Meisters Entertainment Extravaganza at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Hosted by comedian Danny McGinlay, with special guests Charlie Pickering, Adam Richard, Harvey Breen and Gordon Southern, it raised the profile of Quiz Meisters, bringing it to a whole new audience.

2010 - "Ch-ch-ch-changes"2010 has been all about changes at Quiz Meisters. With massive shows at both the Adelaide Fringe and the Melbourne Comedy Festival featuring Australia's biggest names in comedy, including the 7pm Project's Charlie Pickering along with Tom Gleeson and Damien Callinan. 2010 also saw the launch of Quiz-It, Quiz Meister's school trivia package. We're now bringing our unique style of trivia into schools around the country, helping kids get their head around the curriculum. Our new website has just gone live, we've got more and more shows opening up all over Australia and fabulous new hosts bringing stupendous new quizzes to punters old and new.
